ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to evaluate the growth of rubber clones GT1, PR255, RRIM600 grown on different substrates and environments for the production of rubber rootstocks. The experiment was conducted at the Universidade Estadual de Mato Grosso do Sul, Cassilândia University Unit, in Cassilândia-MS. The treatments were conducted in 3 environments: (A1): Sombrite®; (A2) Aluminet® and (A3) full sun, where the clones being tested were: GT1; PR 255 and RRIM 600, grown in substrates: pure soil; soil + cattle manure and commercial substrate usually used for forestry. The experimental design was a randomized block in a factorial 3 x 3 (three substrates x three clones), with 4 replicates with 10 seedlings of rubber trees per plot. The use of commercial substrate and soil + cattle manure in the ratio (7:1) favored the development of rubber rootstock seedlings with taller plants, more leave number, higher mass and higher quality index. For the formation of rootstocks, the variety RRIM600 was the one that showed better agronomic characteristics in the formation of rubber tree seedlings, with higher number of leaves, tallest plants, larger mass and higher quality index. The use of Sombrite® and Aluminet® screens contributed positively to the formation of rootstocks with larger root and above-ground masses. The plants produced in the Aluminet® screen showed higher number of leaves.

Estudou-se a distribuição espacial de Oncometopia facialis (Signoret) em citros, com a finalidade de elaborar planos de amostragens e tomada de decisão para o controle da cigarrinha em levantamentos no campo. As amostragens foram quinzenais, em uma grade de 100 pontos (plantas) em pomar de laranja doce, com armadilhas adesivas amarelas. O número médio de O. facialis variou de 0,35 a 1,17 insetos/armadilha, com a razão variância/média (índice I) entre 0,89 e 1,82. Os testes de ajuste à distribuição binomial negativa, de Poisson e afastamento da aleatoriedade para índice I e Morisita indicaram a distribuição agregada da espécie. O valor do expoente b da lei de potência de Taylor foi de 1,6382 (t = 2,71; g.l. = 11; P < 0,05). Foram elaborados planos de amostragem com níveis de precisão de 10, 20 e 25% de erro na estimativa da média.

The spatial distribution of Oncometopia facialis (Signoret) was studied in sweet orange to elaborate sampling plans and decision-making procedure for the control of this sharpshooter in the field. The samplings were carried out fortnightly in a grid design disposition of 100 points (plants) in citrus orchard, with yellow sticky traps. The average number of O. facialis ranged from 0.35 to 1.17 insects/trap, with the I index varying from 0.89 to 1.82. The fit tests to negative binomial, Poisson distribution, I index and Morisita index indicated aggregated distribution of this insect. The b result of Taylor's power law was 1.6382 (t = 2,71; d.f. = 11; P < 0.05). Sampling plans were elaborated with a precision level of 10, 20 and 25% of error in the mean estimation.

Avaliou-se o comportamento de três genótipos (PI 134417, LA 716 e do híbrido Bruna VFN) de tomateiro frente à infestação por Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biótipo B, em relação aos aspectos fisiológicos de plantas atacadas e não atacadas pelo inseto. O ensaio foi realizado em casa-de-vegetação à temperatura ambiente. Plantas com 30 dias de idade foram infestadas artificialmente com 100 insetos/planta durante dez dias. O híbrido Bruna VFN foi prejudicado fisiologicamente, já que a altura da planta e o número médio de folíolos por planta foram inferiores ao observado nas plantas não atacadas, dez dias após a infestação. Além disso, apresentaram menor comprimento de raízes e diminuição na massa seca da parte aérea e de raízes quando comparadas às plantas não atacadas. Os genótipos selvagens (PI 134417 e LA 716) não apresentaram alteração fisiológica devido ao ataque do inseto.

The performance of three tomato genotypes (PI 1134417, LA 716 and of Bruna VFN hybrid) was assessed during infestation by Bemisia tabaci (Gennadius) biotype B, in relation to the physiological aspects of plants attacked and not attacked by the insect. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at environmental temperature. Thirty-day-old plants were artificially infested with 100 insects/plant for ten days. The Bruna VFN hybrid was damaged physiologically with lower height and mean number of leaves per plant than in the non attacked plants, ten days after infestation. Also, it presented shorter root length and decrease in canopy and root dry matter when compared to the non attacked plants. The wild genotypes (PI 1344417 and LA 716) did not present physiological alteration due to attack from the insect.

Com o objetivo de avaliar os fatores que interferem na preferência para oviposição da mosca-branca (B. tabaci biótipo B) em tomateiro, estudou-se a idade da planta e a posição dos folíolos de maior preferência. Determinou-se, também, a densidade de adultos necessária para se selecionar hospedeiros. Utilizaram-se plantas do híbrido Bruna VFN (Lycopersicon esculentum) com 30, 45 e 60 dias de idade em teste com chance de escolha e plantas com 30 dias em teste sem chance de escolha. As folhas foram coletadas nos terços superior e inferior das plantas e os folíolos foram divididos em três categorias: base (aqueles próximos ao caule da planta), meio e ápice (folíolo terminal da folha). Plantas com 30 dias foram preferidas para oviposição em teste com chance de escolha. Os folíolos do meio e do ápice foram os preferidos para oviposição na parte superior da planta. Os folíolos da base da folha foram os mais ovipositados na parte inferior da planta. As densidades de 100 ou 150 adultos de mosca-branca por planta de tomateiro foram suficientes para assegurar a oviposição adequada do inseto, podendo ser utilizadas em futuros estudos relacionados com a discriminação de genótipos em teste sem chance de escolha.

The aim of the present work was to determine the oviposition preference of the silverleaf whitefly on tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum). Preferred plant age and leaflet position on the plant were studied and the number of adults per plant necessary for selecting hosts was determined. Bruna VFN hybrid plants at different ages (30-, 45- and 60-days old) were offered to adult whiteflies in free choice test and 30-day old plants in no-choice test. Leaves were collected from upper and lower part of the plant; the leaflets were divided into three categories: basis (those near the steam of plant), middle and apex (terminal leaflet). The 30-day old plants were more preferred for oviposition in free choice test. In the upper part of the plant, whitefly adults preferred to oviposit on the leaflets at the apex and the middle of the leaves. However, in the lower part of the plant, the basal leaflets were preferred in relation to middle and apex. The densities of 100 or 150 adults per tomato plant were considered adequate for genotypes screening, using no-choice test.

Dilobopterus costalimai Young é considerada uma das mais importantes pragas na citricultura brasileira por ser vetora de Xylella fastidiosa, bactéria causadora da doença Clorose Variegada dos Citros (CVC). Neste trabalho estudou-se a distribuição espacial do inseto com o objetivo de desenvolver um plano de amostragem para determinar o momento de controlar a praga. Foram feitas amostragens quinzenais de D. costalimai em um pomar de laranja-doce de treze anos de idade sem aplicação de inseticidas para controle desse inseto, entre 11/1999 e 4/2000. Treze amostragens foram realizadas em 100 pontos, utilizando-se armadilhas amarelas adesivas (10 x 25 cm), em Taquaritinga, estado de São Paulo. A variância amostral foi superior à média em todas as amostragens, com índice razão variância/média (I) entre 1,07 e 2,90, índice de Morisita entre 1,07 e 1,57, expoente k da distribuição binomial negativa variando de 1,56 a 14,79. Os testes de qui-quadrado de ajuste à distribuição de Poisson não foram significativos em sete amostragens, enquanto os testes de ajuste à distribuição binomial negativa não foram significativos em todas as amostragens. O coeficiente b da lei de potência de Taylor foi igual a 1,3054 mostrando que a praga se distribui de forma agregada no campo.

Dilobopterus costalimai Young is one of the most important pests in Brazilian citrus crop because it transmits Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that causes Citrus Variegated Chlorosis (CVC). We studied the spatial distribution of the insect, in order to develop a sampling plan to determine the proper moment to control the pest. D. costalimai was collected fortnightly, between 11/1999 until 4/2000, in a thirteen-year-old citrus orchard, where no insecticide was sprayed against this insect. Thirteen samples were performed in a grid of 100 yellow sticky traps (10 x 25 cm) in Taquaritinga County, Sao Paulo State. The variance of the sampling was higher than the mean in all samplings, with index ratio variance/mean (I) between 1.07 and 2.90, Morisita index between 1.07 and 1.57, k exponent of negative binomial distribution between 1.56 and 14.79. The chi-square goodness-of-fit test to Poisson distribution were not significant in seven samplings, however adjust to negative binomial were not significant in all samplings. The index b of Taylor´s Power Law was 1.3054, thus showing an aggregated distribution for this species in the field.
